Learning is a long and quiet journey. A. St. Alilatulbariza, called Aliza, is a 4th-grade student who used to have a very hard time understanding English. Every time she read, she made more mistakes than correct words. Her classmates did not have the same trouble. Because of this, she became curious. “If others can do it, why can’t I?” That question motivated her to move forward and never give up.
Her curiosity made her study much harder than the other kids. Aliza loved to repeat her reading and asked her teacher to help correct her mistakes. Because she often reviewed her lessons, her tongue became faster and more flexible at pronouncing words and sentences. Eventually, she became fluent in the Basic Reading book.
Seeing her progress, Aliza said to her mother, “English at school is easy.” This was normal because she only learned English once a week at school, while at the Rumah Belajar Bersama (RBB), she studied five times a week. However, her teacher at RBB reminded her, “Wherever you are, Aliza, you must never look down on your lessons. Every place of learning has its own strengths and weaknesses. Whatever is taught, study it seriously.” This advice was given so that her learning spirit would stay high.
At RBB, Aliza’s learning challenge increased. She was very excited to memorize English tenses. When she saw the long list of sentences she had to say out loud without looking at any notes, she frowned. It was a sign that the lesson was very difficult for her. She thought for a moment and then smiled. It looked like she found a solution. And she did! She used the same method: reviewing and practicing even harder than before. In the end, the nine-year-old girl was able to confidently change and recite hundreds of sentences in different tenses regularly.
Aliza raised her learning goals again. “Where is the written test for random tenses?” Aliza asked, “I want to be like my friends too.” Her teacher gave her the worksheets along with the instructions on how to do them. Aliza was overjoyed. She never thought she could go this far. She felt proud and felt just as smart as the other clever kids at her RBB class.
RBB Creates a Great Learning Environment
The teaching strategy at RBB is to break down impossibilities. Basically, humans are like a blank sheet of white paper. The learning environment is what fills that blank paper with the ink of knowledge. Children are shaped so that they feel the initiative to move forward on their own. Even though this is a method intentionally designed by RBB, it makes the children feel like they are not being forced, but rather directing themselves to become smart.
Dozens of children like Aliza have gone through this kind of learning. The claim that some children have no talent for English is proven wrong, at least within RBB. To be successful, our children need a learning environment that sparks curiosity, guided by the right direction, quality knowledge, and responsible teachers. That is what we need to improve in our education system.
Destroying the learning difficulties faced by Indonesian children in areas like Bulukumba is a big dream that RBB Bulukumba wants to achieve. Of course, there are still many children who do not have access to a proper education that can build their confidence like Aliza did. Therefore, with the intention to lift up students, RBB is here for them.
